Zanzibar von Lisette van Leeuwen

The name Zanzibar evokes exotic and romantic images. The island is often seen as an African jewel in the Indian Ocean. What not many know is that the island once belonged to the Sultanate of Oman. Under the government of Sultan Said, Zanzibar Town (Stonetown) grew into a real capital in the 19th century and the slave trade flourished. The Omani legacy is still visible today. For example, 99% of Zanzibar's residents are Muslim and many residents live a traditional live. Most tourists come to Zanzibar for the tropical temperatures and beautiful beaches. In combination with the rich history and culture, a visit to Zanzibar is definitely worthwhile.
